Andy Neal has been in touch to let us know about a collaborative student project that has become this years UCF A0 promotional course poster. Check out the making of it here – I found the course to be a careful balance of theory and practise a with a massive emphasis on ideas generation and thinking. If you’re a student considering where to go to study graphic design, illustration etc. Falmouth should be right up there on your list.

Typeface film

This looks interesting – a new film about a rural Midwestern museum and print shop where international artists meet retired type craftsmen. It has it’s UK Premiere at St Bride Library in London on 21 January – find out more here and see the (rather long) trailer on YouTube.

This is the reason I love Flickr! Randomly finding gems like this… Research photography of 18th & 19th Century tombstone typography, shot by Tom Davie in various cemeteries throughout the state of Ohio.

Spotted this beautiful Ampersand carving on the ‘My Favourite Letters’ flickrpool. It’s by Brian Andrews who it turns out is some sort of master wood craftsman and has some incredible hand carved sculpture on his site.

I wrestled with the idea of posting this, as it’s perhaps just me giving in to my inner geek. But I’m curious as to what others more qualified to comment think of this new logo for next year’s revamped series – particularly the first-ever use of iconography. Any thoughts?

Czech graphic design student Marta Maštálková has designed a typeface by pouring liquid caramel onto glass. Maštálková is a student at AAAD Prague’s Graphic Design and Visual Communication Department and is a member of Czech architecture group a1architects.
