You can’t use apostrophes in URLs though…

I’m a possessive obsessive but JK makes a valid comment.
I think the whole re-launch was a bit of a PR gaffe, though. The business’ boss referred to the change reflecting the collective contribution of thousands of booksellers – rather than an individual. But if he’d focused on the pragmatic elements around URLs, there may have been less of a furore.
Then again, any publicity is good publicity and it’s certainly kept Waterstones in the news.

Two rebranding exercises in as many years smacks of panic or indecision, and for me that’s a bigger talking point. This all seems a bit of a moot point to me and is purely PR led. The URL argument is weak too – Sainsbury’s and McDonald’s managed to embrace the digital world with no apostrophe catastrophe. There can’t be many people who’d try using an apostrophe in a URL these days. The web is such a central part of our lives now that our understanding of its use has become second nature.
On the rebrand (or DEbrand!), though, the solution seemed straightforward to me – drop the ‘S’ as well. After all, the name originates from its founder, the very singular Tim Waterstone… Waterstone.com – simple.

The URL is dead. For me that’s a redundant argument – search rules. A successful PR idea with plenty of earned media to prove it.

QC might have something to say about this!
